LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Britain has bolstered its defenses against sophisticated AI threats after identifying over 1,300 cyber vulnerabilities during recent trials. These weaknesses were found across hundreds of government software repositories. The British authorities announced that their initiative will leverage cutting-edge AI technology to improve cybersecurity and pinpoint flaws within critical digital infrastructure. Additionally, officials are formulating plans to address severe incidents involving autonomous AI systems. This effort aligns with a broader strategy to enhance national resilience amid the deployment of more advanced AI models to the public.

Britain expands AI security after government cyber trials
Britain expands AI security measures across government systems and critical services.

In two government-led pilots, a total of 1,352 vulnerabilities were detected and mitigated across 548 code repositories within 18 departments. The experiments aimed to evaluate how advanced AI systems could assist in identifying software flaws and recognizing potential cyber threats. The government now intends to expand the frontier AI security program across various departments, prioritizing systems at highest risk. The initiative also seeks to develop broader government capacity in utilizing AI for cyber defense while maintaining oversight of the technology’s application.

Britain’s AI Security Institute is conducting assessments on state-of-the-art models and testing their safety protocols. Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan noted that the institute employs more than 100 technical experts dedicated to evaluating models and their security features. Current projects include reviews of Gemini 4 Argon and other advanced AI systems. The government emphasizes that independent testing remains essential, as public authorities cannot solely depend on AI developers to evaluate the risks posed by increasingly capable models.

    Expansion of AI incident preparedness

National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with government agencies and the AI Security Institute to establish procedures for major incidents involving autonomous AI agents. These systems can perform complex tasks with minimal human oversight. The proposed framework aims to guide authorities in incident detection, risk containment, and support for affected stakeholders. Officials are also exploring how current cyber response structures can be adapted to handle failures involving autonomous AI and other advanced technologies in critical sectors.

The government is also reviewing potential amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill as it advances through Parliament. Proposed measures include enhanced handling of AI-related cybersecurity risks, major incident reporting, near misses, and control loss events. Existing proposals mandate that regulated operators and digital service providers report significant cyber incidents, with initial notifications due within 24 hours and comprehensive reports within 72 hours. These security measures extend to vital services such as hospitals, energy infrastructure, and drinking-water systems.

    Britain reinforces AI safety protocols

Narayan stressed the importance of combining robust cybersecurity measures with independent evaluations and strengthening domestic technical expertise. He mentioned that legislation might be necessary where current safeguards fall short against emerging risks. The government has begun initiatives to support AI verification and plans to release further information in the coming months. Such verification tools are intended to verify that advanced systems operate as intended and that safety controls remain effective under demanding conditions.

These initiatives are part of a comprehensive government program analyzing the security and public service implications of artificial intelligence. The Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce is examining issues related to economic development, public services, employment, and national security. Additionally, Britain has identified AI as a key policy area for its 2027 G20 presidency. The latest cybersecurity efforts focus on testing advanced AI models, patching software vulnerabilities, and preparing government systems for critical incidents linked to AI technology.
