VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is gearing up to launch BEACONSAT, its first-ever military satellite and the largest domestically produced spacecraft to date. This satellite aims to identify and analyze disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems, such as GPS and Galileo. The Austrian government intends to send BEACONSAT into orbit in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project primarily focuses on detecting jamming and spoofing signals from space and collecting data on when and where navigation signals are disturbed.

Austria readies BEACONSAT military satellite for 2027 launch
Austria’s BEACONSAT project centers on detecting GNSS interference from orbit.

As a part of a multi-year research and development initiative, BEACONSAT will act as a technology demonstrator. Jamming involves the use of radio interference to block or weaken satellite navigation signals, while spoofing involves transmitting false information to mislead receivers into calculating incorrect positions. Satellite navigation is vital for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and other critical systems. The Austrian Defence Ministry anticipates that the mission’s data will support operational activities and enhance understanding of GNSS interference.

GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology firm, is leading the BEACONSAT project and holds overarching responsibility for the mission. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, the company specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, GATE Space provides the propulsion system, satellite structure, and thermal management technology. The company has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.

Core Austrian technology powers the satellite mission

Key components for Austria’s inaugural military satellite come from other European firms. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies high-precision technology designed to detect and analyze GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite hardware, including the onboard computer. The project combines commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space with approximately 750,000 euros in funding via Austria Wirtschaftsservice.

European Space Agency supports and co-finances the mission through its ESA Marketplace program, which promotes technology demonstrations in security-related applications. The initiative enables commercial space technologies to be tested in operational scenarios. Austrian officials characterize BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite program. Its primary purpose is to gather information on interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit, feeding this data into Defence Ministry processes as Austria advances its military space capabilities.

BEACONSAT integrates into Austria’s expanding space program

Austria’s Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated space services unit, focusing on satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is part of this broader structure, with a specific emphasis on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions the Austrian Armed Forces moving from solely utilizing space services to also operating space infrastructure and systems. This strategy was adopted in 2023, with a plan extending through 2035 and beyond.

The scheduled launch in February 2027, using a Falcon 9 to deploy the satellite into orbit, remains the target date. Once in space, BEACONSAT will collect and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research mission. The project unites Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology firms. This mission will mark Austria’s debut military satellite and serve as a platform for testing domestically developed systems aimed at monitoring disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation signals.
