BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – According to the U.S. State Department, Belgium remains at Level 2 on its four-tier travel advisory scale, with the notice issued July 23 urging Americans to exercise heightened caution because of increased crime, terrorism threats, and civil unrest. The update now emphasizes crime and unrest risks more prominently and revises the advisory’s overview, though it does not advise travelers to avoid Belgium altogether. Level 2 advises visitors to be more vigilant and consult official safety guidance prior to traveling.

US updates Belgium travel advisory over crime and unrest
Belgium remains at Level 2 under updated US travel guidance on crime and unrest.

The advisory notes that petty crimes such as purse snatching and pickpocketing are frequently reported in busy tourist hotspots. Many offenses against visitors involve theft of purses or items from pockets. The State Department also issues warnings about robberies, stolen electronics, and thefts from parked cars. Key locations requiring caution include major cities, dining establishments, train stations, buses, trams, and the Brussels metro, especially during nighttime hours. Travelers are advised to keep valuables close, carry minimal cash and IDs, and remain alert to potential distractions in crowded environments.

Particularly highlighted is the rise in bag thefts on trains, especially along the route connecting Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves often target lightweight bags stored overhead. The advisory recommends that passengers keep cash, passports, and other valuables within easy reach and suggests that motorists lock their doors, shut windows, and avoid leaving belongings visible inside parked vehicles. Belgian Federal Police caution that thieves often operate in teams, using crowding, bumps, or staged distractions to steal wallets, phones, and travel bags.

Focus Shifts to Crime and Transportation Hazards

The terrorism section states that violent attacks and related threats continue to pose risks within Belgium. It highlights potential targets such as public events, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, schools, parks, shopping districts, and transportation hubs. The guidance underscores that terrorists and sympathizers may target U.S. citizens abroad. Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis currently places the national threat at Level 3 and describes it as serious. On the department’s four-point scale, officials consider a Level 3 threat as possible and likely.

The revised advisory also emphasizes the importance of awareness around protests and strikes. While most demonstrations are peaceful, they can cause disruptions to transport and vital services. The State Department notes that protests may be triggered by political or economic issues, during major holidays, or significant events. Police typically monitor demonstrations, and travelers are advised to avoid large gatherings. Staying informed about local developments, checking traffic notices, and adjusting plans accordingly are recommended during periods of public unrest when transport delays or closures occur.

Preparation and Vigilance Recommended for Travelers

U.S. officials suggest enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, before or during travel. The program provides alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and facilitates emergency contact with American citizens in Belgium. Travelers should also familiarize themselves with Belgium’s entry requirements, local laws, and health guidelines. U.S. visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa, provided their passports remain valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure from the Schengen zone.

The advisory recommends maintaining vigilance in tourist areas, near banks, or ATMs. It advises monitoring local information channels and knowing how to contact emergency services. Belgium’s emergency numbers are 112 for life-threatening situations across Europe and 101 for local police. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers consular assistance to American nationals. The July update maintained the existing advisory level while highlighting crime and unrest as additional concerns for those visiting Belgium.
