Wind Power Capacity Set to Break Records in Europe Amid Rapid Installations

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is on course for a historic year in wind energy deployment, having added 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity in the first half of 2026, representing a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. As per the latest industry data published by WindEurope, these new turbines produce enough electricity to power roughly 7 million European households and displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. Europe’s wind energy sector is poised for a record-breaking year, driven by heightened activity during the summer months that accelerates the continent’s energy transition efforts.

Europe on track for record year in wind power installations
Commercial offshore wind turbines generate clean electricity across open ocean waters outdoors.

Germany led the regional expansion in the first half of 2026, contributing 3.4 GW—about 40% of all new wind power capacity added across Europe. Over 500 individual turbines were commissioned in Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Other European nations such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France also reported significant capacity growth. Notably, Ukraine added more than 400 MW of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict conditions, while Belgium brought an additional 60 MW online to its national grid.

According to WindEurope’s Autumn Report projections, total wind capacity additions in Europe are expected to reach 24 GW by the end of 2026, setting a new record for annual installations. Industry forecasts see this growth phase as a vital stepping stone toward an ambitious industrial goal of 30 GW of annual additions in the 2030s. During the first half of 2026, investments in new European wind farms totaled 9 billion euros. Meanwhile, national governments awarded over 17 GW of capacity via competitive auctions, with an additional 26 GW scheduled for tender before the end of the year.

Germany Dominates Regional Capacity Expansion With Over Three Gigawatts Installed

Despite these impressive figures, industry representatives highlighted ongoing structural bottlenecks that pose operational challenges to sustained growth. While Germany authorized permits for more than 9 GW of new onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026, permitting activity declined in several key markets, including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Although Europe is heading toward a record year for wind installations, industry leaders caution that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals threaten to disrupt future project timelines.

In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope Chief Executive Officer Tinne Van der Straeten emphasized that 2026 could set a new record for wind installations but warned that maintaining momentum depends heavily on government actions. She stressed that decisions related to administrative permitting rules, auction structures, grid expansion, and industrial electrification made in the coming months will determine whether the sector can sustain its current growth rate.

Onshore Turbines Make Up Three Quarters of New Capacity Additions

To keep pace with current expansion, the trade body outlined five key policy priorities for the European Union and national governments. These include streamlining permitting procedures, expanding transmission infrastructure, and directing Emissions Trading System revenues toward industrial electrification initiatives. The organization also calls for a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under existing scenarios, total installed wind capacity in Europe could reach 436 GW by 2030, supplying 27% of the EU’s electricity needs.

Upcoming ministerial meetings before the winter heating season are expected to review these policy recommendations. Official trade portals will continue to monitor national turbine installation data and auction outcomes, ensuring ongoing progress toward Europe’s decarbonization targets.
