Smaller rooftop arrays accounted for the majority of installations, while larger projects contributed significantly to the increase in overall capacity.
All eyes now turn to the upcoming plug-in solar regulations set to take effect on August 27, 2026. These rules permit approved microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible devices can provide no more than 800 watts of alternating current output and must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2, ensuring safe operation within the local distribution network. The regulations exclude plug-in batteries and devices that store electricity imported from household circuits.
Safety standards regulate plug-in connections
This legislative change updates the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, one day following ministerial approval. The amendment establishes a specific exception to existing restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment. It mandates that each plug must be verified by a notified body to meet the relevant BS 1363 standards. Product approval is valid across the UK, while the electricity safety amendment applies to England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification details requirements related to electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labelling, and consumer guidance. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, confirming stable operation with no sustained unsafe energisation or thermal risks. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, which informed the UK-specific safety standards for market approval.
Approved products prepare for retail availability
A government consultation attracted 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and members of the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, and most also endorsed the plug regulation changes. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear user instructions. Others emphasized the importance of distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Major retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing for the rollout of this new product category. These systems are designed for households that cannot install conventional rooftop solar, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems utilizing the new connection method cannot be legally operated before August 27. Starting on that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect via standard household sockets. The June capacity total excludes systems that will use the new plug-in framework.
