Wildfire in western Germany prompts evacuation of 1,800 residents in Gey district

HÜRTGENWALD / RankWire.AI / – German authorities mandated the evacuation of roughly 1,800 residents in western Germany on Friday as a fast-growing wildfire threatened residential areas. Official emergency agencies confirmed that civil defense teams directed the immediate exit of all residents from the Gey district within Hürtgenwald municipality, located in North Rhine-Westphalia near the Belgian border. The emergency response was triggered early this morning after fire lines advanced within 300 meters of the community boundary.

Municipal emergency response teams manage logistics during large scale civil defense evacuations.

The fire initially ignited Thursday afternoon, spreading across around 25 hectares of dense woodland, approximately the size of 35 football fields. Elevated seasonal temperatures, dry winds, and drought-stricken vegetation accelerated the fire’s growth, causing it to quickly expand to over 300 hectares of forest overnight. Municipal emergency systems activated the highest threat level via the national NINA alert app, advising residents to gather essential documents and medications before evacuating.

A primary reception and aid center was set up at an elementary school in the nearby district of Straß to assist displaced families. Regional transport authorities kept roads closed throughout Hürtgenwald to prioritize emergency vehicles and heavy machinery. Safety officials confirmed evacuation efforts were orderly, with local rescue teams conducting door-to-door checks to ensure full compliance across all residential areas.

Efforts to extinguish the fire faced major complications due to unexploded World War II ordnance found in the nearby woodland, remnants of historic military activities. Emergency crews reported hearing occasional explosions from buried explosives as the fire approached a former military munitions site near Düren. To reduce risks for ground crews and establish firebreaks through dense terrain, military logistics units deployed armored vehicles from the Bundeswehr to clear blocked access routes.

Aerial firefighting units were deployed alongside ground crews from regional fire services. Specialized helicopters equipped with heavy-capacity water buckets carried out continuous drops, utilizing water from local reservoirs to douse hotspots around the fire perimeter. Over 300 emergency responders from municipal, state, and civil protection agencies, supported by Technisches Hilfswerk specialists, established physical barriers aimed at preventing further spread toward residential areas.

Regional authorities expressed concern over the proximity of active flames to vital infrastructure and nearby neighborhoods. North Rhine-Westphalia Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur publicly acknowledged the significant operational difficulties faced by local responders and confirmed that state emergency funds had been activated to support municipal containment efforts. Authorities from the Bezirksregierung Köln continue coordinating closely with local officials to ensure command remains steady on-site.

Civil protection teams are still stationed around Gey to protect residential buildings and prevent rekindling as tactical operations persist. Environmental agencies monitor wind directions and humidity levels to evaluate potential threats to neighboring communities. As the wildfire forces the evacuation of 1,800 residents in western Germany, officials insist emergency services will stay operational until ground conditions are fully stabilized.
