Belgium health data indicates 8.2% of deaths linked to obesity

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – A significant public health revelation from Belgian research institute Sciensano shows that in 2022, 9,509 deaths were associated with excessively high body mass index. This figure represents 8.2 percent of all fatalities in Belgium that year, resulting in a mortality rate of more than one death every hour due to weight-related health issues. As part of an unprecedented effort to measure population-wide BMI-related mortality, scientists estimated that obesity-linked health conditions led to over 150,000 years of life lost cumulatively.

Belgium health data shows obesity linked to 8.2% of deaths
European medical organizations track metabolic risk factors to develop health policy guidance.

The detailed epidemiological study analyzed underlying causes of death to understand how elevated body mass index contributes to chronic illnesses. Results pointed to cardiovascular problems as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease and other dementia forms, were the second most common, accounting for 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular disorders contributed to 1,171 deaths, alongside notable figures from chronic kidney disease and various digestive system cancers.

Analysis of demographic data reveals that the risk of death associated with excess weight increases notably with age. Seniors aged 65 and older experienced the highest prevalence of weight-related health issues. The gender breakdown shows that men generally had higher mortality rates across most age groups, but among those aged 85 and above, women registered greater total death numbers. Epidemiologists attribute this to the longer average lifespan observed among females.

Cardiovascular Diseases Main Cause of Weight-Related Deaths in Belgium

Regional analysis across Belgium highlights marked differences in death rates associated with obesity. The southern part of Wallonia reported the highest mortality rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capital Region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000. Flanders had the lowest impact, recording 73.60 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Public health experts suggest these variations are influenced by socioeconomic factors, dietary habits, and healthcare access differences across regions of Belgium.

These findings arrive alongside policy reviews led by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health initiatives. Officials are now using the data to evaluate the long-term economic strain on the healthcare system caused by chronic non-communicable diseases. The researchers employed a comparative risk assessment approach, calculating the population attributable fraction for each illness to establish baseline estimates that will inform future preventative measures.

Dementia and Alzheimer Disease Responsible for Over 1,600 Deaths

At the European level, organizations such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate regional health policies. The Belgian report aligns with broader EU health objectives aimed at decreasing early mortality from non-communicable illnesses. The World Health Organization’s international guidelines continue to endorse integrated, multisectoral strategies, emphasizing public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical management of metabolic risks.

These findings provide an empirical foundation for health authorities working to reduce high body mass index prevalence across Western Europe. Quantifying deaths and years of life lost enables policymakers to direct resources toward screening programs, interventions, and lifestyle improvements. As regional authorities analyze this data, national health systems are expected to prioritize early prevention efforts to curb the prevalence of chronic diseases nationwide.
