EU Reports 37% Decrease in Irregular Border Crossings through July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary Frontex data reveals that irregular border crossings into the European Union declined by 37% during the first seven months of 2026. The agency recorded approximately 61,000 detections at the EU’s external borders from Jan. 1 through July 31, a figure that compares to the same period in 2025. Most significant migration routes experienced fewer crossings in this timeframe. These figures serve as the latest indicator of irregular entry activity across the EU’s external frontier.

The busiest route remained the Eastern Mediterranean, with 20,232 detections, representing a 28% decrease from 28,068 during the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean followed, recording 16,454 detections, down 55% from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes made up roughly 60% of all detections included in the EU entry total. Libya persisted as the primary country of departure on the Central Mediterranean route during the seven-month span.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, with 11,217 detections—a rise of 37% from 8,175 a year prior. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared with 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June totaled 2,569, up from 1,079. The Western African route experienced a 60% decline to 4,682 detections. Crossings through the Western Balkan decreased by 26% to 4,910, and the Eastern Land Border dropped 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean Routes Lead in EU Border Entries

Additional data concerning Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom showed a significant decline as well. Frontex reported 22,469 attempted or successful crossings exiting the EU, a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel figures are not included in the EU entry total. The agency also noted 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, which is an increase of 9%. The seven-month data exclude exceptional events at the external border in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its figures on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency emphasized that revisions could occur as authorities update their records. The statistics reflect detections rather than individual persons, meaning an individual may be counted multiple times if they cross at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction applies across the agency’s external-border dataset and is critical when comparing route totals to the overall number of individuals involved.

    Seven-Month Data Reinforces First-Half Downtrend

The current figures continue the trend identified by Frontex after the first six months of 2026, when more than 49,000 irregular border crossings were recorded—also a 37% decrease year on year. During that period, detections on the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher compared to the previous year. However, the seven-month comparison shows a 37% increase. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June, with a 60% decrease recorded through July.

Frontex reports that approximately 3,800 officers are deployed at the European Union’s external borders. These personnel assist national authorities with border management and life-saving operations at sea. They also support member states with adherence to the rules outlined in the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data indicates an uneven trend across different routes, with most major corridors seeing broad declines, except for the Western Mediterranean route, which has experienced an uptick.
