FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – Germany is enhancing its drone defense system to keep pace with rapid technological advancements in unmanned aircraft. According to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, counter-drone efforts will remain a long-term priority for the Federal Police. He made these remarks during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday. Dobrindt highlighted an ongoing technological race between defense mechanisms and those seeking to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

The Federal Police established a dedicated counter-drone unit in December 2025 to support nationwide operations. The unit currently comprises around 70 personnel, based on the latest government data. Plans are underway to expand this figure to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has ordered the development from four to eight operational sites, aiming to enhance coverage and response times throughout Germany.

Germany has also placed a focus on deploying counter-drone technology at key airports under Federal Police jurisdiction. These airports include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has been acquiring mobile detection and defense systems for use at aviation hubs. Specific details about these systems remain undisclosed publicly due to security considerations. While police are tasked with drone defense on airport premises, state police handle security outside these zones.

    Federal police unit expands nationwide

This expansion follows a security breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany on August 4. Federal prosecutors reported that a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport’s premises. Evidence indicates that there was intent to cause an explosion using the aircraft. Additionally, a cargo plane collided with what is believed to be another drone in the surrounding airport area. On August 6, Germany’s federal prosecutor assumed control of the investigation.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation under the oversight of the federal prosecutor. Authorities have yet to publicly identify those responsible for the incident. The government has refrained from assigning blame as investigations continue. The case has renewed focus on safeguarding airports and other critical infrastructure, with German officials emphasizing the need for faster cooperation among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations handling drone-related threats.

Research center dedicated to drone threat mitigation

Germany inaugurated a Technology Center for Drone Security on August 18 at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. The facility also leverages research capabilities at the organization’s Braunschweig location. Its purpose is to evaluate drone detection and defense systems under real-world conditions. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs. The center will facilitate collaboration among researchers, security agencies, and private companies working on counter-drone solutions.

This new establishment operates alongside Germany’s Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which manages information sharing and assessments among federal and state authorities. Germany has also expanded the authority of federal police concerning drone detection and interception. Dobrindt emphasized that the rapid pace of technological change necessitates continuous development and testing of new systems. The government’s current strategy involves a comprehensive approach combining operational police units, coordinated security assessments, and dedicated research efforts to strengthen defenses against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones.
